New Delhi: The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), a day after the inauguration ceremony of its Platinum Jubilee Techno Fest, unveiled the thematic representations of ‘Aerospace & Strategic Sector’ on Tuesday in the 36th India International Trade Fair (IITF) at Pragati Maidan. Dr. GirishSahni, Director General (CSIR) interacted with the industrial partners and several notable dignitaries attended the conclave.
The conference commenced at the CSIR hall number 12-A, where senior scientists from various CSIR labs were present.
Dr. J.J. Jadhav, Director, CSIR- National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL), in his presentation, gave highlights of the achievements and contributions of NAL in the field of Aerospace & Strategic sector. Said Mr. Jadhav exclusively, “this is a very encouraging event. If we combine our expertise, we can take up big projects. Also from the NAL side, we have showcased Carbon Composites, Simulator, Redomes, etc. We are also looking into civil aircrafts vision. It has helped us to tell industry that what is our plan and technologies which are already commercialized. It was a very interactive session with all.”
He showcased the promising technologies being used in the different aircraft of Indian Armed Forces. Focusing upon Public-Private partnership, he presented an outline for the future of light-weighted aircraft to be used for defense forces
The conclave unfolded with precise details about the Aerospace technology and innovations as Dr. K. Muraleedharan, Director, Central Glass and Ceramic Institute (CGCRI) discussed about the importance of Nano Technology, Radiation Shielding and Thermal Generation. He also spoke about the prevalent use of Optical Fiber which has proved to be a boon for the Telecommunication sector.
Naresh Chandra Sharma, Head of Domestic Aerospace & Defense, Tata Advanced Material Limited elevated the conclave with his views on composites being used in aircrafts that have benefitted the aerospace sector. It includes fins and several composites used in the cockpit of an aircraft.
Professor R.K. Sinha, Director, CSIR- Central Scientific Instruments Organization (CSIO) shared the lab’s contribution to the Aerospace sector. CSIO has manufactured the Helmet Mounted Display for aircrafts’ pilots, vehicle and human detection system used by the Indian Army and Laser Shadowgraphy. The bullet proof jackets are also made by the continuous efforts of CSIO.
The conferencealso had an interactive session by the other industrial partners of CSIR. Ketan. J. Patel from Unique Chemoplant Equipment addressed the conference with his detailed presentation about the Aerospace Autoclave Development. It was followed by the presentations of Varinder Singh and Vinod Mathews from Bharat Electronics limited and Captronics Systems Pvt. Ltd respectively.
Dr. SitenduMandal from CSIR-CGCRI spoke about the importance of commercialization of the technologies in recent times. He focused on the quantum of chemical analysis and to meet the demand of Atomic Energy. He emphasized on Radiation shielding window glass, radiation signals and Bead Technologies. He said that there is no threat of the radiations to the environment.
Signing of MoUs and Technology transfer also marked the day 2 of the Technofest by CSIR. It includes Enzen Global Solutions Private Limited, Bangaluru, for the development of a Wind Solar Wind Hybrid system for domestic applications, Aditya Birla Group, Mumbai- Technical Advisor Consultancy for establishing and a composite manufacturing unit for light Comabt Aircraft (LCA) composite parts and H&R Johnson (India) for low melting High Sodium Glass Beads, Mumbai.
DG-CSIR, Dr. GirishSahni concluded the conference with the question and answers session. He said, “thanks to all the participants for joining this grand event at Techno Fest. There are new challenges that we shared and rectified here. People with ambition want to turn up to Research & Development that is a formidable challenge. It is highly palpable job that needs to be tapped soon.”
The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) dedicated its theme day for the empowerment of farmers in India, as the organization is celebrating the ‘CSIR Platium Jubilee Technofest’at 36th India International Trade Fair (IITF) atPragatiMaidan. On the tenth day of the event, the CSIR theme of the day was ‘Agriculture and Floriculture’.
Prof. A.K. Tripathi, Director, CSIR-CIMAP (Lucknow) welcomed theparticipants. He said, “CSIR is focused on suchnumerative crops that are not in the focus of ICAR. Our focus is on industrial crops for Aroma, Ayurveda,Unani and Floriculture. The aim of CSIR labs is to provide alternative to the farmers to increase farm incomes.”
Talking about the condition of farmers, the Chief Guest, Padma Bhushan, Prof. R.B. Singh, stated, “Those who feed the country live in misery. Farmers don’t wantcharity, they have the right to progress. We aim at wiping out hunger from this country by 2030.”
Dr. GirishSahni, Director General, CSIR said, “Farmers are the topmost priority of CSIR. We have to bring the best technologies for maximum yield and our scientists are dedicated to achieve this goal”.
Scientists and researchers from concerned laboratories attended the seminar. The pavilion of ‘Agriculture & Floriculture’ showcased the latest agro technologies that increase the production of crops by 30%.
The seminar also focused on the production of menthol mint, aromatic grasses, Lavender and improved varieties developed by CSIR.Dr.Tripathi stated, “We produce and export 90% of the Menthol mint in the world.Aroma Industry in the country is flourishing because of CSIR technologies.”
Scientists from CSIR in Agriculture and Floriculture theme delivered lectures about high yielding plant varieties of medicinal, aromatic and floral plants. They also touched upon their marketing. A large number of farmers and entrepreneurs attended the lectures. They shared their experience on agricultural practices in aromatic and floral plants.
The day concluded with the signing of 2 MoUs between CSIR and its industrial partners.
CSIR-NBRI, CSIR-CIMAP, CSIR-IIIMand CSIR-IHBT conducted Science based activities for the school students, and a quiz on aroma and medicinal plants. The winners were awarded with different aroma kits.

In order to pitch up the grand 2nd India International Science Festival -2016, which will be going to be held on 07-11, Dec- 2016, at CSIR –National Physical Laboratory (NPL) campus-New Delhi, the Hon’ble Union Minister of Science and Technology and Earth Sciences Dr Harsh Vardhan addressed a press conference at CSIR Science Centre, Vigyan Kendra, Lodi Garden, New Delhi on 2ndDecember, 2016.
The fest will be inaugurated by Union Home Minister Shri Rajnath Singh on 8th December. Israel minister for Science, Technology and Space Ofir Akunis will also visit the fest on 8th December.
Emphasizing the importance of taking science into rural India, the Hon’ble Minister said “The Ministry of Science and Technology and Ministry of Earth Sciences has been organising India International Science Festival (IISF) in association with Vijnana Bharati (VIBHA) to promote the science & technology developed by the Indian research labs and to inculcate the scientific temper among masses. The theme of this year’s festival is “Science for the Masses”.
The budget of the festival has been increased to Rs 12 cr this year compared to last year’s Rs 4 cr.
Addressing the media, the first time cabinet minister said, “We are a government that believes and supports in scientific research, including an appropriate balance between fundamental research to support new discoveries and the commercialization of ideas, will lead to provide an ample employment opportunities for India’s sustainable economic growth”.
India has declared 2010-20 as the “Decade of Innovation”. In this context, the series of India International Science Festival (IISF) is an integral part of India’s long term vision in developing and widening the spectrum of scientific temper in India and abroad’ the Minister said.
The minister also said around 5,000 young scientists will participate which is a first of its own kind in the world. He even said, the ministry has urged all the Members of Parliament to make sure, that five students should participate from their adopted villages to participate in the fest. The minister named it Science Village. “This is the first time in the history of India, the Hon’ble Members of the Parliament across the party line sending more than 3000 young children from their adopted villages to the science festival Dr Harsh Vardhan stated.
The Minister viewed that, the grand success of first IISF-2015 at IIT Delhi has set a unique example of inimitable festival in bridging the gap between Indian scientific innovations and practises. “Continuing with the same enthusiasm, motivation and desire, the second edition of IISF is primarily aimed to popularize the subject of science and also pool all the scientific knowledge for the larger benefit of the rural masses he stated.
Underlining the record number of total participants in the Young Scientists Meet the Minister stated that, “this year the total figure of abstracts for Young Scientists Meet (YSM) that we have received is 1769. After reviewing by the expert committee for the final presentations the total number is 241 for the oral presentation and 1329 for the poster presentations. Among all the papers this year, Talking Book and Agro boat-device to predict weather condition through smartphone for farmers, the wearable demon slayer for security of women, Mechanical Tap to treat sewage water, Solar marine monitor device for defense forces ,extraction of diesel from the fruits waste are some of the highlights for the upcoming meet, the minister stated.
Last year, dressed in white lab-coats, 2,000 students across the National capital have entered Guinness Book for World Records for conducting the ‘world’s largest practical science lesson, which will be challenged this year during the fest.
Adding further flavour to the event the minister stated that “the Industry –academia interaction where the industries get opportunities to develop competitive manufacturing capabilities and improve their services through collaborating with the academia, further in the international science film festival segment, the nationally and internationally award winning films on various facets of science would be screened in this science festival. ‘We are also having competition for the Professional and students who are making films on Science” he added.
In conclusion, the minister said that “the five day India international science festival would defiantly open up new avenues for scientific research and laying a solid foundation in fulfilling the long-term mission of the taking the science into the masses.

New Delhi- The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), striking a paradigm shift to the leather industry, showcased its theme-based presentation on ‘Leather’ at CSIR Platinum Jubilee Technofest at 36th India International Trade Fair (IITF), Pragati Maidan. The theme pavilion on ‘Leather’ showcased various leather technologies and exhibits speaking very high about technological advancements in the leather industry. Dr. D. B. Chandrasekaran, Director, CSIR-CLRI welcomed the delegates at a round table panel discussion moderated by Dr. T. Ramasami, Former DG-CSIR/Former Director, CSIR-CLRI who gave an overview of the futuristic technologies to boost the leather industry.
The panel discussion focused on two major technologies developed by CSIR-CLRI. The lab will be developing affordable sports footwear of international brand caliber. This initiative is taken after the Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked the scientists to manufacture affordable sport shoes at CSIR Platinum Jubilee Foundation Day Celebration at Vigyan Bhawan, on 26th September this year. The panelists discussed the scope and plan for its launch within three years from now. Mr. Puran Dawar, Regional Chairman, CLE, said, “Product innovation in footwear sector is necessary.”
Waterless Chromium Technology developed by CSIR-CLRI has revolutionized the Indian leather industry.
Dr. Nishad Fahima, Principal Scientist, CSIR-CLRI said, “It (Waterless Chromium Technology) has dismantled the 150 Year long process of using water in the tannery industries. It has benefitted the environment, as no water is used in the technology; the risk of wastewater discharge and pollution is zero.” This technology outreached globally. “CSIR-CLRI has transferred this technology to Ethiopia and few European countries.” she added.
The ‘Leather’ pavilion intensively exhibited 10-12 samples of leathers, handcrafted footwear and bags that attracted the visitors. CSIR-CLRI also emphasized on ‘sustainable environmental management’ that reduces greenhouse gases by 50% and sludge generation by 80%. The exhibits showed CSIR initiative on ‘Wealth from Waste’, an initiative by the lab to produce fabric and products from leather waste and biomaterial waste. CSIR-CLRI is also acting as a fashion niche to the Indian leather world as it is manufacturing fashionable apparels made of leather. Products based on chicken feet-skin, fish skin and ostrich skin have been developed by CSIR-CLRI.
The panel discussion was later addressed by Mr. Habib Hussain, Chairman, Leather Sector Skill Council who talked about untapped opportunities and research on materials.
Science-based activities were organized for the school students organized by CSIR-IICB & CSIR-IGIB. It was followed by a quiz contest, live science demonstration and public talk.
The day embraced MoU signing between CSIR and Punjab Leather Federation. Aound 15 tanners signed for the technology transfer. Lt. Col. Paul, President, Punjab Leather Federation, was present at the event and expressed gratitude towards the lab on the occasion of the MoU signing.
The pavilion of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research(CSIR)’s adjudged First (Gold Medal) for excellence in display in the category, ‘Ministries & Departments’at the 36th India International Trade Fair (IITF) which concluded here on Sunday.
The Gold medal was presented by the India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) Chairman, Mr. L.C. Mittal.1
Dr.GirishSahni, Director General, CSIR said: “Getting recognized for what CSIR is doing is indeed exciting. Everything happened because of the hard work put in by the entire CSIR family. The outcome of the last 75 year journeyof the organization was on display and people liked it. We tried to portray our technologies in an aesthetically appealing way and we succeeded, as we stood first. This will boost us to continue the good work in the future.”
Talking about the mission and vision of CSIR,he added: “A number of projects are in the pipeline to take our mission projects further. More than 10 projects are being undertaken, including menthol mint production, enabling leather industry and new improved high-yield crop varieties for farmers which will increase their incomes. ”
After receiving the award, Dr. Daljit Singh Bedi, Head USD and Coordinator of CSIR Platinum Jubilee Technofest expressed satisfaction, saying it was the most appropriate recognition of the teamwork of CSIR, depicting its contribution to the nation in its journey of more than seven decades in the most effective manner.”
The Technofestkicked-off on November 14 and each day was dedicated to different themes on various technologies, innovation and products developed by the CSIR laboratories. A total of 14 theme-based pavilionswere set up in the Technofest. Beginning with the theme of ‘Aerospace & Strategic sector’, the event witnessed other theme-based activities focusing on ‘Generics & Healthcare’, ‘Engineering & Infrastructure’, ‘Energy’ and ‘Leather’, Mining, Minerals & Materials, Chemicals & Petrochemicals, ‘Ecology & Environment’, ‘Water’, ‘Agriculture & Floriculture’, ‘Food & Nutrition’, ‘CSIR for Societal Interventions’, CSIR 800 and IP and Entrepreneurship.
The Technofest received a widespread applause and appreciation as it warmly got maximum footfall on Sunday, the last day of the 36th Trade Fair.
“This is an extraordinary effort by such a premier institution. This is a golden opportunity to experience the inventions by the pioneer scientists of our nation and CSIR. We hope to see such initiatives every year,’’ a visitor said.
For the commercial launch of the latest technologies by CSIR, 45MoUswere signed with the industrial partners. More than 150 S&T presentations were made by CSIR professionals and its industrial partners. Several panel discussions session were held during the course of the event. The mission mode technologies and innovations are ready to being transferred in the future.
CSIR, with its motto of ‘Touching Lives’, is leaving a remarkable imprint upon its technology partners and technology users.
It proposes to encapsulate a scientist’s performance into a single equation
A controversial proposal to grade the performance of CSIR scientists is expected to be soon cleared by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, who is also the president of The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), which is India’s largest chain of publicly-funded research laboratories.
“It just needs to be signed by the PM and cleared by the governing body and will soon be implemented,” Girish Sahni, Director-General, CSIR, told The Hindu . The new appraisal system will reduce the importance to research publications and gives greater weight to developing products as also scientists who have successfully collaborated with industry and been part of teams to develop marketable products.
The new system proposes to encapsulate a scientist’s performance into a single equation and is a departure from the existing format of having scientists internally evaluated by their peers.
The 75-year-old CSIR has a large network of 38 laboratories spread across the country that are involved in a wide range of research from battery technology and genomics to glass-making.
Over the years, the Council has emerged as India’s biggest publisher of research papers as well as the largest patentee, though only a fraction of these have been become commercial products.
The Hindu spoke to several scientists at various levels across labs on the new grading process. Several, on condition of anonymity, expressed apprehensions, with one saying that reducing scientists’ performance to an equation was “irrational.”
That was because different CSIR labs had different mandates: some were focussed at looking for drugs, some for testing if potential drugs were safe or could be made more efficient and still others were geared towards making low-cost products that weren’t necessarily marketable but had great societal impact. “All of these were equally important and reducing this complexity to a single equation or a single score is unfair,” a senior scientist told The Hindu . A key point under discussion is how much of a relative weightage ought to be given to products and technology development. “From lab to lab, there are concerns that it could be as high as 70 per cent,” a director of the lab told The Hindu . “That has got some scientists concerned.”

The Customised Car Driving Simulator helps in familiarising the driver or learner driver with vehicle controls, its operations, such as steering control, gear change for manual transmission, progression in various driving conditions.
The Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), a prestigious lab under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has developed the simulator to cut down road mishaps- presently 1,214 crashes occur daily on Indian roads.
In a simulator room, the learner driver will also learn lane discipline and how to meet and pass other vehicles before they get into a real car and manoeuvre through traffic.
“This is the first of its kind simulator developed in the country which will serve as a safe medicine for the drivers as well as the commuters on the road. The simulators play an important as it contains various modules for the assessment of the driving skills across varying terrains and weather conditions,” said Dr Neelima Chakraborty , senior principal scientist, who introduced the psychomotor testing module in the software.
“The test will be helpful to highlight which type of training is required for a particular driver,” she said adding that RTOs and vehicle driving schools can implement the gadget.
On Wednesday, the CRRI signed MoU with Gurgaon-based Faros Simulators Pvt Ltd which has fabricated the simulators, for its commercial implementation in the country.
The simulator has necessary accessories including steering, accelerator, clutch, and gear box and brakes, besides a 135 degree screen display which gives the real feel of actual road environment with realistic Indian road infrastructure.
Chakraborty said that the Supreme Court appointed Road Safety Committee has already given go ahead to the simulators. “We are in the process of talks with the RTOs to launch a pilot project.”
The simulator can be mounted in any vehicle body, said Bharat Kapoor, Executive Director of the Faros Simulators.
Kapoor explained that the three panels, which display the road conditions with background, cover 135 degrees of vision, much like a car’s windscreen. The vehicle meanwhile, has all the usual fixtures like an accelerator brake pedal and clutch as well as gear shift, rear-view, side-vi ew mirrors and other display like a regular car.
